Greetings

To respected members of Korean Society of Echocardiography,
How are you?
My name is Song, Jong Min from Asan Medical Center of Ulsan University and I currently serve as the general affairs director of Korean Society of Echocardiography. Although the general affairs director is normally in no position to give such greetings, it seems that a request was made for me to do so as the chairman and vice-chairman were determined to serve consecutive terms during the previous council. Our comparatively peaceful society is currently experiencing a significant change as the new board of directors is established and as our society is getting the media spotlight and caught up in controversy. As the controversy over the personnel assisting echocardiography still remains to be settled with regard to the authoritative interpretation made by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the conflicts and charges occurring among occupations and the assertions made by doctors’ associations, the enforcement of the foretold overall expansion of insurance benefits applicable to echocardiography is gradually delayed and the tension continues to build up. By cooperating with Korean Society of Cardiology, our society’s board members and a number of doctors are making efforts to solve such pending issues, and the key to solving such pending issues is being discovered.

Our society has made significant progress. Our spring conference now serves as a global conference worthy of its name, and our society has made continuous progress through actively communicating with numerous global academic societies such as ASE, EACVI, JSE and AAE. Our echocardiography workshop has been recently making progress through creating a link among disease-based symposiums. As far as the echocardiography certification system is concerned, the well-settled education, test management and certification management system are evaluated to be making great contributions to enhancing Korea’s echocardiography, and the echocardiography education for residents has been expanding as well recently. Our journal has changed its name to JCVI in preparation for a greater leap.

I believe that our society’s such potential can be collected once again to wisely solve the currently experienced issues. To do so, I believe that it is necessary for our society members to communicate and gather opinions to come up with the best applicable methods. I am uncertain about other societies, but I remember our Korean Society of Echocardiography as a pleasant society, meaning that it is a society where good people gather. I believe that we will be able to make better progress in the future as long as good people gather frequently to communicate and collect wise thought. I wish to you good health that will help you easily overcome this summer and I wish the best of luck for your family and work. Thank you.

2019 Annual Spring Scientific Conference of the KSC in Conjunction with KSIC, KSE, and KSLA

19th ~ 20th April 2019, Bexco, Busan

From 19th to 20th April 2019, 2019 Annual Spring Scientific Conference was held in Bexco, Busan. This year, wide-ranging in-depth programs were prepared and a number of people who participated in the conference were able to spend valuable time. In addition to Korean Society of Cardiology, Korean Society of Echocardiography, Korean Society of Interventional Cardiology, Korean Heart Rhythm Society, Korean Society of Lipid and Atherosclerosis, the 5 societies that co-hosted the annual spring scientific conference, Biomedical Engineering Society for Circulation also joined to co-host the conference in 2018, and Korean Pediatric Heart Society, Korean Society of Heat Failure, and Korean Society of Cardiometabolic Syndrome also joined to co-host the conference this year. As more societies were joined, the conference’s contents and formats were enhanced and diversified. Each field’s basic contents, recently published researches and medical treatment guidelines, and diverse sessions using controversies related to such researches and guidelines attracted the attention. In addition, through the societies’ joint sessions such as imaging techniques and procedures related to structural heart disease and the arrhythmia procedure for patients with heart failure, the involved information were exchanged and discussed among the fields. The basic research sessions such as the utilization of animal models for cardiovascular system researches, the use of electrocardiogram for mice, the non-coding RNA and the adult stem cell were interesting as well. In addition, as continuous progress has been made in the field of information communication technology, Korean Society of Cardiology has been leading the attempts to apply such changes to the medical treatments and researches related to cardiovascular diseases since several years ago. During this annual spring scientific conference, a session covering the latest view on the convergence between information communication technology and cardiovascular diseases provided the participants with new knowledge.

To live up to the name of annual spring scientific conference, an opportunity was given for experts from each field to gather and exchange their expertise and opinions, and it was a conference where attempts were made to integrate not only the fields of preclinical medicine and clinical medicine, but also the fields of information communication technology.

2nd KSE Symposium & 38th Workshop

6th July 2019, Severance Hospital, Seoul

On 6th July 2019, when it was felt that summer has come, the 2nd KSE Symposium and the 38th Workshop were held in the Yoon, In Bae Hall of Medical College of Yonsei University. Just as how the 37th Workshop was held along with the 1st KSE Cardiomyopathy Symposium, the 38th Workshop was held along with the 2nd KSE Pulmonary Hypertension Symposium. A number of doctors from various hospitals nationwide participated in the first session despite the early Saturday morning schedule. The first morning session covered the basic concept and treatments related to pulmonary hypertension and the second morning session covered a clear lecture and a passionate discussion on various issues associated with pulmonary hypertension. After a short lunch break, the latest view and expertise learned in the morning were reviewed through case reports. Diverse case reports were submitted in advance and a total of 13 case reports were presented by 9 universities. The case report presentations were given in order by Groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 according to the classification of pulmonary hypertension. In fact, since sharp questions were asked by not only the senior persons present and professor panelists, but also the audience during the workshop case study presentation hours, it is inevitable that the presenter will be nervous. However, since such questions and discussions are not some knowledge simply acquired from books or literature, but Korea’s great scholars’ opinions applicable to actual patients, I believe that they are more valuable and practical. When that day’s academic events ended and I visited the Yonsei-ro street of Sinchon, the place was packed with people participating in Sinchon Water Gun Festival. Once more, I felt that I was in the middle of summer, and my expectations were high for the next workshop to take place during this fall in Gwangju.
