Greetings

I, who am not fully qualified, have served the society as the president of the proud Korean Society of Echocardiography that continues good tradition, and I think it a great honor. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year after its founding on February 15, 1993, the Korean Society of Echocardiography has grown into an exemplary and leading society The dedicated sacrifice and efforts of great seniors and enthusiastic members who have been leading the society in the meantime made this remarkable growth possible, so I am truly grateful to them.
There are pending issues that should be solved by the society both internally and externally this year. First, at this point of time ahead of the full benefit of Echocardiography insurance according to the government's policy to expand the supply of ultrasound benefit, we are striving for the prevention of abuse of echocardiography, echocardiography agency certification for the efficiency of medical treatment and quality control of examination, introduction and establishment of certified sonographer systems in addition to the system of echocardiography certification which has been operating successfully since 2009. Second, as projects to expand the society, we are paying attention and effort to active foreign exchange with international academic organizations, JCVI's leap into an international academic journal, activation of society workshops for active exchange among members, support for various academic and research activities, fund raising in a developmental form and expansion and transfer of the secretariat. I would like to ask for your continuous interest and encouragement to solve pending issues for developing into a better society and will do my best to serve as president during my tenure.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of members who are devoted to the development of the society in the busy schedule such as patient treatment and academic · research activities and wish you all the best for your development and good health.

36th Workshop of Korean Society of Echocardiography

September 29, Medical Center of Ewha Womans Univ. Mok-dong Hospital, Seoul

For me, who had never thought about anything other than internal medicine since I was a student, an internal medicine ICU (intensive care unit) intern was a difficult experience. Since I was not strong enough, fear increased slowly in my mind in the face of CPR and death, which occurred all the time on watch night Thinking that I wanted to be a physician because I wanted to do something, cure and heal patients, but ‘the reality is very’, I gave up the application for internal medicine after the autumn wind started to blow. After a year off, my friend recommended me to do medical services. It was a medical service organization that performs a minor surgery such as cataract, large goiter, cleft lip palate, vesicovaginal fistula while staying in countries that lack medical care near the port for two to three years using a modified medical ship called Mercy ship. At that time, Mercy ship was in Liberia, Africa. I did not hesitate to send out my application, then I worked part-time to raise the expenses and immediately went to Africa after receiving an e-mail about permission to join. My job was field team screening job, and it was to designate a town for each day of the week, select patients with cataract but without glaucoma in the town and schedule the surgery. I woke up at dawn, made sandwiches for our team and local interpreter volunteers and packed Ophthalmoscope and emergency medical supplies, and headed to town, where hundreds of people were waiting in line for us. When I conducted a history taking for each person and looked into the optic disc with an Ophthalmoscope, the sun was high up in the sky. Africa was not hotter than I thought, so it was strange that people were wearing thick jackets on a rainy day. It was also strange that candles lighted up in the town and market at night because the supply of electricity was not good after the civil war. Two months later, I shifted my field of work and moved to the internal medicine team inside the ship. At that place, there was Dr. Wolfgang, a cardiologist from Germany. Dr. Wolfgang told his experiences and thoughts to me who did not choose internal medicine because of the fear of 'not doing anything' and 'death' and gradually erased my fears and planted a precious lighthouse of heart, 'the result after doing your best is the will of heaven'. After returning to Korea, I entered the department of internal medicine with my hardened heart, and then started the first part of internal medicine first year as a part-physician of Professor Gil Ja Shin of Cardiology Internal Medicine. In retrospect, it was a precious gift from heaven that I started my first internal medicine doctor under Professor Shin Gil-ja. Despite being already prominent, she has always studied and led a small study every week even with her busy schedule in order to share her study with us. At the time of the round, she listened to the opinion of the doctor who does not know anything and trusted my plan. So the relationship with professor Gil Ja Shin started. When I began to fall into the charm of internal medicine, it was the Cardiology Internal Medicine that caught my eye again. There are so many things that I can do through many procedures and techniques, and the effect was obvious. Above all, what captivated me was the world of hemodynamics that produces fun answers after thinking and worrying over and over again. And I was fascinated by the echocardiogram that allows me to measure and interpret it. After that, every time I have time, I went in and out of the ultrasound room as if a sparrow goes in and out of the mill and struggled with a probe until the heart of the patient in the emergency room or the intensive care unit is seen. My love for echocardiogram grew up rapidly through my teachers who checked my inadequate view and gave me generous guidance. When I was in the fourth year of resident after 4 years, I went to the Japanese Society of Cardiology as the first overseas society with the research that I carried out with professor Shin Gil-ja. The time I spent with the professor who gave me careful care like my parents during the society schedule and who gave me generous teachings as a senior of my alma mater and as a female senior doctor of Cardiology Internal Medicine was the cornerstone for me to choose the path of the circulatory physician and still remains as strong self-esteem that fills my heart
So, the last Korean Society of Echocardiography workshop was much more different from others. Since it was a workshop to commemorate the retirement of professor Gil Ja Shin who I believed and followed like my mother, I wanted to do my best in preparation and to devote myself in the education of my full-time major in which I decided to make a case presentation. I wanted to express my gratitude to residents who volunteered to express their gratitude to the professor and visited the flower shop with them to choose a pretty bouquet. Though my skills are not enough, I wanted to contain every moment, so I took a lot of pictures and developed all the pictures and put them in a pretty album, hoping that my respect for the professor can be delivered a little bit. The last workshop has remained as a precious memory in my mind. I am always thirsty for learning because I am not good enough yet, but now that I must take courage to judge, interpret, and make important decisions, I will keep the valuable knowledge and experience I received from professor Gil Ja Shin in mind and try hard to be a physician who does not harm and helps patients at the least. And as professor Gil Ja Shin has done to me, I promise to work and study harder so that I can become a senior who can give generous teachings to my juniors. I sincerely thank Professor Gil Ja Shin for giving me this valuable teaching.

The 45th Annual Scientific Meeting of Korean Society of Echocardiography

November 24 ~ 25, Grand Walkerhill, Seoul

The 45th Annual Scientific Meeting of Korean Society of Echocardiography was held in Grand Walkerhill Seoul from November 24 to 25, 2018. On the 24th day, a considerable amount of snow fell and it was more inconvenient to move than usual, but the venue of the society was crowded with those who visited from early hours. The snow on this day was first snow of this year, and some overseas lecturers from countries with little snow were delighted to see snow.
This year, colorful and abundant programs were prepared, making the audiences of various fields and occupations spend pleasant and informative time. Thanks to last year's response, ‘Real Heart and Echo: Anatomy that Can or Can Not be Seen by Echo’Session was carried out, which allows the visitors to see heart diseases and echocardiography findings this year. This year, in addition to tissues and images, 3D printing was added to help understand normal heart and several heart diseases. At the Session for Young Cardiologist, lectures and active discussions were held by professors on heart valve diseases and diastology. At the Blood Session, a heated debate on valva aortica reflux and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has opened up the opportunity to examine and summarize recent issues surrounding the diseases. Through a joint session with the Korean Society of interventional procedure and heart failure, we arranged an occasion to emphasize the role of cardiovascular imaging and the importance of multidisciplinary care in treatment of structural heart disease and management of heart failure. In addition, opinions were actively exchanged with lectures on the latest views in various fields at the joint session with societies in Asia Pacific, Japan, China, the United States and Europe. This year, APP became more complete than before, so not only conference related text messages will be sent but check program schedule, view abstracts, real-time voting and question-answer during lecture and search function is easy to use, increasing participants’ satisfaction. This Fall Conference has provided various programs, ranging from basic to advanced knowledge in the fields of echocardiography and cardiovascular imaging, broadening the selection of participants and increased the convenience of the participants and encouraged more active participation through improved conference APP etc.
