Greeting
Members, how are you all? Along with professor Bae, Jong-Hoa from Kyunghee University whom I worked with to establish Korean Society of Echocardiography, there are many people who remain unforgettable. Many senior doctors in Korea who made a lot of efforts to let Korean Society of Echocardiography stand where it stands today, and various overseas professors(professor Kim, Sam Soo, professor Kim, Jong-Seong, professor Lee, Bang Hun, professor Park, Wee Hyun, professor Jeon, Jae Eun, professor Lee, Jae Woo, professor Choe, Kyung Hoon, professor Lee, Heung Jae, professor Ma, Jae-Sook, professor Jeong, Choong Hwa in Japan and professor Oh, Jae K. in US: names of those retired from their universities as far as I remember) who contributed to globalizing our society are part of those many people. As the technology and equipment for diagnosis are making progress, the current equipment for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases is making progress as well through application of artificial intelligence. However, I believe that echocardiography plays the most important role as a noninvasive inspection method conveniently used for dynamically and hemodynamically evaluating the cardiac functions and structures. Moreover, I believe that the depth of scientific knowledge among our inspectors plays the most important role in accurately evaluating the cardiac functions. I believe that becoming fully aware of the basics is just as important as acquiring new knowledge in the field of echocardiography. I would like to request the members to actively participate in our passionate society-related activities and academic activities run by the doctors in charge of our society, so that Korean Society of Echocardiography may serve as a society where its members are able to mutually share knowledge and friendship.

KSE News
1. Echo Seoul & Cardiac Imaging 2016/9th~11th September 2016/ Baekyangnuri Grand Ballroom & Kumho Art Hall Yonsei - For 3 days from 9th to 11th September 2016, Echo Seoul & Cardiac Imaging was held at Baekyangnuri Grand Ballroom and Kumho Art Hall Yonsei. Baekyangnuri Grand Ballroom and Kumho Art Hall is an underground space established after developing a park on the ground through the Yonsei University Baekyang-ro Re-creation Project. The strength of Echo Seoul & Cardiac Imaging is that it covers diverse lectures ranging from advanced lectures on latest updates to basic lectures for medical residents and sonographers. In particular, the lectures were given this year based on the clinical ‘circumstances’ and ‘cases’, and, therefore, I was able to satisfy curiosity and vividly experience unexpected moments. In addition, in comparison to any of the previous symposiums, the lectures given this year diversely covered imaging modality in a wider range.
2.30th KSE Workshop / 8th October 2016/Auditorium, 10th Floor, Emergency Department, Kyungbook National University Hospital
- 30th KSE Workshop was held on 8th October 2016 at Kyungbook National University Hospital. During the two sessions of Harmony of Echo and Intervention(senior persons: Sohn, Dae-Won & Youn, Ho-Joong) When Echo Met Sick Myocardium or Valves(senior persons: Kim, Dong Soo & Chae, Shung Chull), 12 cases consisting of rare clinical cases and interesting/instructive cases were reported. Various doctors shared their experience and acquired knew knowledge through the case reports and passionate discussions among various doctors. In this workshop, KSE Workshop App was initially used. After installing the app on the smartphone, the lecture notes were confirmed through the app, and the audience was able freely throw real-time questions to the senior persons and to the panel through the app as well. Instead of using the paper-based textbooks, the app was used to conduct Q&A. Through this workshop, it was confirmed that the society is making efforts to enhance and smartize the workshop contents.
3. Echo Chosun 2016 / 16th October 2016/5th Floor, Uiseong Building, Chosun University Hospital
Echo Chosun 2016 was held at Chosun University Hospital in October when autumn started to ripen completely. “Echo Chosun”, just as its English title “Echo Chosun Hands-on Workshop(ECHO)” reads, is the only opportunity throughout the year for various doctors from this region to directly activate, test and hear about the echo machine. After the opening speech, explicit and beautiful lectures were continuously given by professors Kim, Yong-Jin, Hong, Geu-Ru, Park, Seung Woo, Kim, Woo Shik, Cho, Goo-Yeong and Chung, Wook-Jin. In particular, in this workshop, professors Lee, Ju-Hee and Son, Jang Won gave young lectures whereas professors Sohn, Dae-Won, Song, Jae-Kwan and Ha, Jong Won insightfully satisfied our curiosities through the meet the experts lecture. In comparison to other lectures, I believe that Echo Chosun was more valuable in that it provides us with an opportunity to learn from the passionate and enthusiastic instructors who are willing to use their experience-based know-how to give lectures ranging from the basics to the latest updates.

This year’s programs were organized based on diverse and interesting topics, and, therefore, the audience from diverse occupational fields was able to take lectures preferred according to individual interests. In this symposium, technical areas ranging from the basic principles of echocardiography to the 3D echocardiography and point of care ultrasound were covered, and inclusive information ranging from the basic knowledge relating to various cardiovascular diseases to the latest released guideline was covered as well. In addition, through the session co-run by The Korean Society of Heart Failure, Korean Heart Rhythm Society, Korean Society of Interventional Cardiology, Korean Society of Cardiovascular Imaging and Korean Society of Adult Congenital Heart Disease, various expert groups gathered to discuss the roles, importance and future direction of echocardiography. Outstanding lectures were given by the invited well-known overseas lecturers, and the joint session run by the societies from US, Europe and Japan provided an opportunity to share knowledge and solidify partnership. 41st KSE Autumn Symposium included a total of 10 highlight sessions. 2 sessions were co-run by a partner overseas society and other sessions covered diverse topics such as valvular heart disease, 3D echo, HCMP Imaging Evaluation and Diastology 2016. On the first day, a session entitled ‘Look into the Right Heart’ was co-run by Japan Society of Echocardiography. In this session, an in-depth discussion was shared on how to evaluate and treat the right heart under diverse circumstances. In a session entitled ‘Valvular Heart Disease’, the updated valvular disease guideline was discussed mainly based on the semilunar valve. On the second day, European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging heart Imagers of Tomorrow (EACVI HIT) and Club 40 from Korean Society of Echocardiography shared an exchange session. In a session entitled ‘Valvular heat Disease’, the updated valvular disease guideline was discussed mainly based on the mitral valve. In a session entitled ‘Diastology 2016’, the complex diastolic dysfunction evaluation was educationally discussed within the big framework based on recently released 2016 ASE/EACVI Diastolic Dysfunction Evaluation Guideline. Lastly, a session entitled ‘Unforgettable Case in My Life’ which was run by the most experienced doctors from Korean Society of Echocardiography graced the symposium through attracting the interest of the participants. KSE Autumn Symposium is truly the largest echocardiography-related symposium held in Korea, and the doctors, nurses and medical technicians currently involved in or willing to be involved in the field of echocardiography all participate in this symposium. In this autumn symposium, 5 sessions were prepared for these doctors, nurses and medical technicians. On the first day, in the session for sonographers, a lecture was given by the experienced sonographers based on their experience and know-how.
