Greeting

Of the four major phases of human life – birth, growing old, being sick and death, the Society plays a role to help reduce the pain in two phases of growing old and being sick. Heart disease, in particular, can cause an unexpected loss to many people. The Society is working hard to ensure heart disease is diagnosed in advance and successfully prevented while searching for a better treatment. To this end, the Korean Society of Echocardiography was established in 1993 and is now in its active adolescent period far over twenty-year experience. The Society has grown remarkably thanks to the hard work and devotion of many senior and junior members. It has become one of the cardiology societies with the largest number of members based on the harmonious coordination between the existing and younger generations inside. The Society has an efficiently-organized committee and research society operated in close cooperation. I am very confident about the Society in such many aspects.

The recent internal and external medical environment has not been very smooth. Thinking about the future of the Korean Society of Echocardiography, I believe it will continue to develop in the future just as it has done so until now based on the dedication of all of its members even in difficult situations. If we, each and every member, can care for each other and trust each other, I am convinced that the Society will grow further and step farther.

ESE News

1. Echo Seoul and Cardiac Imaging 2015 / September 18~20, 2015 / Asan Medical Center

The year’s event was also consisted of inviting and shared programs for all from echo beginners to experts. Especially the lectures of “Stress Cardiac Imaging”, “Aortic Stenosis”, “TAVR” and “Possible post-TAVR Paravalvular Leakage” provoked heated discussions.

The first tried during the event attracted so many attendees crowing the whole auditorium. The session received great response for presenting how to obtain better images clinically and whether a certain image could contribute to precise diagnosis. Other than this, clinical experiences were shared in presentations by many domestic and international practitioners. Great scholars also provided their views in the event sessions.

2. 27th Workshop of Korean Society of Echocardiography / October 24, 2015 / Chonnam National University Medical School

Since the cancellation of the 26th workshop due to the MERS outbreak in South Korea, the 27th event was organized in 9 months from last end of January. The workshop was organized far away from Seoul, still, as successful as any other round, registering 140 participants for their thirst for knowledge

The 1st part of the workshop dealt with rare but indispensable cases and the 2nd part provided the roles of echocardiology in clinical decision making. The rare cases of mitral valvular prolapse, sudden cardiac death, especially the syndrome accompanying QT prolongation, etc. were unfamiliar still interesting. The pulmonary angiosarcoma case provided a good opportunity to identify the differences from intimal sarcoma.

It was a very useful occasion to gather together to discuss only rarely-experienced critical cases and learn a lot from more experienced senior professors. Many members participated to talk with each other over the delicious dinner, building closer network. I became truly wanted to recommend more members to come and join the event.

3. ECHO Chosun 2015 / October 25, 2015 / Chosun University Hospital

The Eco-Chosun Workshop hosted by Cardiovascular Hospital of Chosun University Hospital marks the 11th anniversary this year. For clinical practitioners, three sessions were provided on echocardiography-based clinical assessment and decision in diseases including atrial fibrillation. For beginners, the basic principle of echocardiography was introduced along with its results reporting method. In addition to these, a session was organized to introduce diversified image diagnosis applications such as echocardiography, MDCT and MRI.

4. 39th Fall Conference of Korean Society of Echocardiography / November 21~22, 2015 / The-K Seoul Hotel

English session: As the 39th Fall Conference of Korean Society of Echocardiography had 12 overseas speakers representing 7 countries in America, Europe and Asia, 8 sessions were organized in English. They were valuable and rewarding occasions to share the latest insights and interesting topics with global scholars.

Session for experts: The Fall Conference of Korean Society of Echocardiography 2015 provided 4 sessions for echocardiography experts. On Saturday, the 21st, ‘young investigator award (YIA)’, ‘oral abstract’, and ‘hands-on learning of Echo software’ were provided; on Sunday, the 22nd, ‘learn from my academic leave’ session was provided. At the YIA session, Dr. Ran Heo of School of Medicine, Yonsei University, was rewarded for ‘Automated Quantification of Mitral Regurgitation by 3D Real-time Full Volume Color Doppler Transthoracic Echocardiography a Comparison with a 2D Proximal Isovelocity Surface Area Approach’. The ‘Learn from my academic leave’ session provided lectures on US experiences of Drs. Hyungseop Kim of Keimyung Medical School, Sang-jae Rhee of Wonkwng Medical School, Sang hoon Seol of Inje Medical School; and Jin-Oh Choi of Sungkyunkwan Medical School.

Highlight session: The Fall Conference arranged very useful 15 highlight sessions lectured by domestically and globally renowned experts to listen to profound and most updated view. There were also sessions organized jointly with other societies and KSE’s research associations to exchange different views on diverse diseases while activating communication with other societies. In the joint symposium with the Japan society of echocardiography, aortic stenosis and strain were discussed in depth. Just as in other years, the session between EACVI’s Cub 35 and KSE’s Cub 40 – gatherings of young researchers and cardiologists - received much attention from the participants.

Session for beginners: The morning session of the first day was ‘How to Session for Sonographer’. In the session, sound theoretical background was introduced along with more practical tips learned in the field. The ‘Learn from Cases’ session was a good occasion to share interesting cases and lessons learned through painful experiences. Comprehensive basic lectures on echocardiology were provided ranging from anatomy, physics to cardiac tumor, aortism, and systemic disease, introducing useful theoretical knowledge for beginners. The Hands-on session was well received by participants by providing opportunities for beginners to learn how to obtain basic images firsthand and for experienced practitioners to perform more in-depth practice.
